The Old Fruitmarket

The Old Fruitmarket, one of Glasgow's best-loved buildings, has been chosen as the venue for the Scottish Style Awards 2007 - due to take place on the evening of Friday 26th October.

Rich in social history and urban heritage, this charming and quixotic 19th century market hall was originally constructed in 1852 with facilities for 72 stall-holders. Its cast-iron structure was inspired by the revolutionary design of the Crystal Palace, centrepiece of Prince Albert's Great Exhibition of the previous year.

Of course, the city's wholesale fruit merchants long ago decamped to more modern facilities at Blochairn. But unique features abound in the characterful edifice they left behind, not least the original cast-iron balconies, traders' signs, and cobblestone paving - all of which were retained during the recent £13million renovation project that turned this building plus the adacent City Halls into Glasgow's foremost venue for music performance.

Now, the Old Fruitmarket is destined to prove a truly magical setting for this year's celebration of all that's best across Scotland's thriving creative industries.

Scottish Style Awards guests will arrive at the magnificent Italianate frontage (added in 1882 by John Carrick), and ascend the red-carpetted staircase to be met by the popping of Moët & Chandon corks.

From this suitably splendid champagne reception in the very grandest part of the complex, they'll proceed to take their seats in the atmospheric early Victorian market hall - enhanced for this very special occasion with a spectacular mirrored set.

In such a very special place, the Scottish Style Awards 2007 is bound to prove a night to remember.
