Sam McKnight
Respected by designers, photographers and journalists worldwide, Sam McKnight has kept his place as the number one session hairdresser.
With a lengthy career spanning three decades Sam has always been at the forefront of session hair styling.
In 1978, Sam worked on his first Vogue shoot. He has since collaborated on hundreds of Vogue covers and stories, featuring in almost every international edition as well as maintaining his special relationship with British Vogue - a mutually inspiring and creative collaboration spanning his 30 year career, and which in 2006 saw him work on 8 out of 12 of the magazines coveted covers.
Working closely with photographers such as Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, Patrick Demarchelier, Irving Penn and Richard Avedon throughout the 1980's, Sam helped create groundbreaking images setting the foundations for a new wave of hairstyling, and clinched his name internationally. Now with a new wave of important photographers stamping their mark in the new millennium including Craig McDean, Nick Knight and Solve Solve, Sam continues to play a major role in defining our attitudes towards beauty and hairstyling.
Finding himself at the forefront of the fashion and supermodel explosion of the mid 80s, Sam became the hairdresser responsible for many of their unforgettable looks.
Linda Evangelista, Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss continue to have their hair preened by the maestro, for fashion shoots, shows and advertising campaigns, as do the recent plethora of 'Supers' Daria, Gemma Ward, Stam and Lily Donaldson.
Celebrities are always top of Sam's client list and he has been behind some of their most recognizable images in recent history. They have included Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Elizabeth Hurley and Uma Thurman, Sienna Miller, Drew Barrymore and the most recent 'Bond Girl' - Eva Green. The most famous being the late Princess Diana, whom he regularly accompanied, and whose hair he styled for her most iconic images, from 1990 to 1997, the year of her untimely death.
Sam's accolades for his work are countless. They have included a 3-year consecutive win in the 90s for British Session Hairdresser of the Year and also picked up the coveted 'Venus' award in Paris and New York. As well as being named Best Session Hairdresser of the Year at the UK Elle Style Awards 2002. Culminating in being named as a Global Ambassador for Pantene, a title that he holds to date.
Sam consistently works with the designer of the moment, including campaigns, and shows for Giorgio Armani, D-Squared, Prada, Etro, Gucci, Chloe, Stella McCartney, Julien MacDonald and Matthew Williamson among others. Towards the end of 2006 completing print and tv ad campaigns for luxury brands such as Christian Dior, Dolce Gabbana, Rimmel with Kate Moss, Etro and Anna Molinari.
